Priest Martin Stredonius

The main idea of the statue proposal is based on the legend of the last cannonball shot by the Swedish soldiers, which stopped by Priest Stredonius’ feet. This story presents an apt metaphor for the legacy of Priest Stredonius as a man who fought offensive aggression with his spiritual and moral power. It is a classic Christian conflict between good and evil.

The placing of the bronze ball allows for immediate contact with the public and it was the author’s intention for the dark patina to be removed and naturally polished by direct touching. Jan Šebánek used two of Stredonius’ quotations in the upper part of the cylindrical pedestal that refer to his timeless way of thinking. The programme of the festive revelation of the statue included a Pontifical Holy Mass with Brno Bishop Vojtěch Cikrle as the main celebrant, who blessed the new statue.
